An image sensor is a device that converts an optical image into an electronic signal.
Image sensors are devices that take an optical mage and directly convert it to a digital image. Referred to in marketing literature as "silicon firm" or "silicon eyes", these devices are made of silicon since silicon has the properties of both being sensitive to light in the visible spectrum and being able to have circuitry integrated on-board.
It is used mostly in digital cameras and other imaging devices. Early analog sensors were video camera tubes, most currently used are digital charge-coupled device (CCD) or complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor (CMOS) active pixel sensors
Silicon image sensors come in two broad classes as CCD type and CMOS type and they are further explained in following pages
1. CCD - Charge Coupled Devices
2. CMOS - Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor
4. CMOS Image Sensor Characteristics
