Requirement of rotating the antenna is dependent on the architecture of the antenna, distance and direction of the transmitting towers.
The simplest of antennas would be a Dipole antenna. This would not be suitable for bad reception area as this is a low gain antenna, where the gain is 2.15 DBi. The most commonly used antenna is known as YAGI antenna which is known as a high gain antenna that has a gain of over 20 DBi. The significant difference could clearly be seen by the numbers mentioned above, YAGI antennas have a focused area in which it capture television signals as shown in the diagram below;
If the antenna is not positioned in line with the television signal there would be a loss in picture quality or no picture at all depending on the direction. In order to view multiple channels rotating a high gain antenna would give maximum picture quality.This would significantly help people in rural areas as the distance from transmission towers and geographic location could result in bad reception.
